house design competition

their goal is to build an energy efficient home. we are live with the details. reporter: central -- park because all of these tiny houses right here, parked here at the -- this is one of ten that is at -- that are here in -- they are taking part in the

competition. i wanted to turn off the community solar street and go onto raley's way. this is the first time you have ever done this you said you did it in part because it was just more sustainable in terms of the cost and wanting to educate

the students about how to do it. it's the first one in the nation that's been done that we can figure out. what we have done is looked at the decathalon. they tend to be 1.5 million or -- 1.6 million.

what we can do hear is have the children or the students i should say learn everything they can learn in a $1.1 million home for a 50 to 60,000- dollar home many we have been able to engage the engineering students, home life students and the communications students

all in creating their own small tiny house and it's 100% renewable energy powered and is all self-contained. we are getting liquid sunshine today. we will see how well the energy goes. reporter: let's take a

little stroll down the way and you can see this is probably about a half of the house that are involved. there is ten total from schools all over. there is nine here that have made it to the they are all different levels

of university. we have community colleges, we have state colleges, we are really excited to see the diversity. we have agriculture, seaside, each house was -- had to create it's own target client and environment.

from the different lots you can see how they are set up. they tried to recreate where they will be placed in their final destination. we are excited to see the work they have done to create their own little individual environments.

reporter: i think we snuck up on a judging right here. yes it looks like this the is the home life judge. here is where the teams will tell the judges exactly who their target client is, why this home reflects their needs and their lifestyle.

why this home could be a fordable for that target client and then go in to the inside and actually describe and show how this home reflects those lifestyle choices and that reporter: i love it. i was -- it's really about trying to pinpoint the right

climate. . that a reason we wanted to make the entire campus involved. a lot of times these events just entired. if you love engineers our want more at smud and the community.

if you can build best in the world and can't sell it you will still broke. you better make it pretty, functional and work. you have your chance to check them out this weekend. in this next hour we will go inside hopefully one of them.

stay tuned for that. back to you. great.
