house design company

[gary] so like, speaking of that like, youwant to definitely work with somebody who's knowledgeable. if you were hiring a architectural designfirm to build your home, what are the criteria you'd be looking for? [kathy] so maybe to answer your question gary,if you don't mind you know, there's obvious answers to those questions. you know checking references, looking at portfolio, you know driving by and seeing some of their projects. all of that.

so maybe i'll talk about what i think is commonlymissed questions. one of the really good questions i alwaysencourage people to ask about is what is the firm's background as it relates to the constructionsite? and what i mean by that is, you know designis great it's fun and it's creative. so that's definitely one huge piece whichyou can usually tell from a firm's portfolio if they're strong it or not. the part of the process that's hard to tellis the quality of the final construction documents. so basically your blueprints that you getat the end of the day. what is the quality of those?

what you actually see on paper and communicateto the trades on site is probably one of the most important pieces of the entire designprocess which you know, as a homeowner they are kind of almost 1 separate move. the point is that you want to make sure thatwhoever is doing those drawings actually understands how things work on site. you can ask any custom home builder, or anyhome builder in general out there, how many times they have come across a set of drawingswere they say oh this is great, how am i supposed to make this work on site? and you know, and then sure that's maybe goingto happen but you certainly want to make sure

that when it's your project and your set ofdrawings going out to site, even though there may be questions, they should be minor questions. and fundamentally speaking, your set of drawingsshould be buildable and constructible. so the question to ask a design form whenyou're asked --- when you're interviewing them is how much experience does not onlythe principal of the firm have on the construction side, but how much experience does the teamhave comma and more specifically how much experience to the people who are doing thedrawings have on-site? have they ever been on site? or are they just educated you know, kind ofin school where you know they're basically

just doing lots on paper. there are some programs now i know at bcitwhere i'm fairly certain that you have hands-on, you know, experience we are actually trained. but even to add to that, industry experiencelike all the tools on-site, in the real world, is very important to have.
