house design yourself

hi. im doug patt and this is the how to drawlike an architect series. part 1. the floor plan. a floor plan is a drawing showing thelayout of a building. it shows information as though a section was cut through the wallsof a building at about 3 to 4 feet above the finish floor. the information it includesis varied. its drawn in order to show the relationship between walls, doors, windows, cabinetry, furniture, floor finishes, mechanical elements and in general different spaces ina building. a floor plan can include a lot of detailed information including the constructionmaterials. in order to show this information youll need to know what the physical materialsyour walls are composed of in order to represent them accurately in a drawing. this first floorplan shows the walls without detailed material

information and represents more of a presentationdrawing or one that might be shown to a client in say, the design development phase. thewalls are shown in a dark poche. the spaces on the interior are left lighter and indicatedfloor finishes. in this case hardwood and stone. the windows are shown with slightlymore detail set into the walls. the doors of the house are shown with a curve to showthe direction they swing. the exteior profile of the entire building should always be shownin a slightly darker line to indicate very clearly the perameters of the building. thisparticular floor plan shows ,what you will see in later episodes, is a shingle stylehome. as you can see from the plan a small driveway runs through the house. ive designedthe house to have quarters for domestic help,

a mudroom and large kitchen directly accessiblefrom the driveway. a dining room off the kitchen, a generous foyer with stair to the secondfloor and bath. a family room with large fireplace and a study off the family room. youll noticethat the exterior walls are drawn thicker than the interior ones. this is because theexterior walls have a stone veneer and wood framing with plaster interior finish. thiscreates a thick wall above the stone veneer that makes the walls look very substantialfrom the exterior. the interior walls are drawn more narrowly at approximately 6 representing2x6 framing with plaster finish. youll also want to include furniture in a presentationdrawing to give the floor plan scale and familiarity. also notice that the furniture and floor finishesare drawn with light lines whereas the walls

are drawn with thicker lines. this is doneto reinforce the building elements as the most critical to the viewer. well take a look at an elevationin for part 2. see you next time.
