house design basics

hey there, this is nico from floorplanner and welcome back to the basic drawing tutorial.in this series i’m explaining how to draw a simple house like this.in the previous videos we drew the walls added doors and windows and a staircase.but this plan still doesn’t really tell you a lot.we want our plan to show what room is what and also show the area size of a planand improve the looks. some nice colours, and some nice carpeting.so let’s get started! click the coloured surfaceto get a small menu that gives you the option to choose a room name.scroll down and find hallway.

this menu also shows the area size of thisroom: 13 square meters, or, if you switch to feetit’s 140 square feet. the first icon here, will show more properties.here, there’s a list of textures for the hallway we are looking for a woodenflooring. click somewhere else to get rid of the menu.now let’s repeat this for the other rooms. here’s the electricity cupboard.i want to give it just a plain grey colour. this will be the toilet.so let’s select toilet and i want some little tiles. double-clicking a room gives direct access to the room properties.let’s make this the living room and give

it a hardwood flooring.with these icons you can also rotate the texture. or type.in the previous tutorial we saw that creating a room with the first icondirectly gives you a room surface. this happens every time you create an enclosedspace with walls. so if these black lines enclose an area, then automatically the program detects this and will generate a surface.so also, if you remove a wall, it will not be enclosed any moreand the surface disappears. let’s undo this now.i’m explaining this because sometimes you want to haveanother type of surface within a room.

then you don’t have an enclosed surfacebut you still want a different texture and a different area.for instance in our plan we want an open kitchen in this corner.for this we have the ‘draw surface tool’, it’s the second construction icon.let’s just click it now: draw surface and you cursor changes into a cross.i’m going to start the kitchen floor on one of the wall corners over here.click for the first point, and release. and then if you move your mouse you see asmall line with a dimension. and now i’m going to draw the surface pointby point. so: from this corner, to this corner, andthen to this corner.

the last point has to be placed on the startingpoint to finish the surface. click and it’s finished.if we click this surface, you see that it highlights the edges.and if you select an edge, it’s highlighted and you can move it.i’m going to move these edges a little bit so they align with the inner walls.when i drew the corners, they snapped to the wall cornersand that’s actually in the centre of the wall. and now i double-click the surface and name it kitchen also i want some checked tiles. okay, the kitchen is done.and now it’s time to draw a garden.

i move my plan and click again the draw surfaceicon. and i will start my garden over here.click once for the first point, and move the mouseand draw another point, and another one and now actually i don’t want this cornerto snap to the wall corner but alongside the walls.to do this, you have to hold the s key, it will toggle off the snapping.and now i can click again and again and again and once more to finish the surface.now i’ll move this corner to the edge of the walland this line to align it with the other wall. we’re almost done, only i want to make acurve here.

corner dots are grey, and in the middle of the corner dots there’s a white dotwhich is the control point. click and drag to make a curve.and release. and then click somewhere else in the canvas to deselect.oh, i forgot, we want to have some grass texture. let me double-click the garden surface, select‘garden’ and scroll all the way down to find some grass.let’s save our changes and maximize the viewand we’re almost done, the only thing i want to do is show the totalarea size of the plan. the interior area and the exterior area.i’m going to show a text over here using

the comment tool.click and drag the fifth icon and release and now you can double-click this and youcan type something. so we have the ‘interior’ and the ‘exterior’and i want to make this outlined to the left and a white text color and get rid of theoutline. also, make it a little bit biggerand drag it into the corner how do we get the interior area?click the right mouse button somewhere in the gridand you get a menu with all kinds of properties for the plan,in here you can reset your interface, but you can also mirror your plan, rotateyour plan.

we are looking for the show floor area.click and you see a menu saying that there are four generated areasmade by the room tool, with a total area size of roughly 73 square meters.this is, added together all the interior areas that the program detected.so that is actually the interior. let’s type it over here:“73 m2” and apart from that, you can also see thatthere are 2 custom areas, which is actually the kitchen that we drew, and the garden. in total that’s 40.16 m2, but we only needthe garden. just click the garden area and see that wehave 27.6 m2

let’s round it to 27 m2.okay let’s save our changes and our plan is done.check it in 3d and you can see that we have a garden, some nice hard wood flooring, a tiled kitchen surface and some wooden flooringin the hallway. i’ll tell more about surfaces in the advancedtutorials, but i’m going to leave it for now.in the next video we are going to add a kitchen and also get some furniture.subscribe to our channel or come back to our tutorial page for more videos.thanks for watching, bye!
